As my regular readers will know, I got really into eating out and reviewing restaurants when I was in Paris. So, I couldn’t have been more excited when I was contacted by Barraka to come in and try their food. Barraka is a Mediterranean restaurant based in central London, near Liverpool Street station and Spitalfields Market. “Barraka” means “blessing” in Moroccan and it is the aim of the owners to bless their customers with great food and they most certainly do!

As soon as I walked in, I was welcomed with smiles from all of the team and handed a sample of their Mediterranean chicken. This was a-mazing so I ended up opting for this with a salad bowl later. There’s a great atmosphere in this joint from the moment you walk in and I get the impression that if I became a regular here, I would also become friends with the team members. The team was incredibly helpful and helped me choose what I wanted and can offer you advice on what you might like and what everything is made from. It was great to see that Ben, the manager, was working alongside the rest of the team himself, which convinced me that this is a warm and welcoming establishment.
The kitchen area is almost part of the restaurant so you can see that everything is freshly prepared to order and that only the best ingredients are used. Barraka’s menu is very simple, which is perfect because the last thing you want in a busy lunch break is to be bombarded with a complex menu. First of all you pick from their three main dishes: a laffa (wrap), a baguette or a salad bowl; and then you pick your meat. For the meat options you can choose from chorizo, Mediterranean chicken, chicken schnitzel, rib-eye beef, or halloumi.
Although the wraps do look incredibly tasty, in the end my boyfriend and I both went for salad bowls. You can pick and choose what to get in your salad if you’re fussy but I just opted for a bit of everything and it did not disappoint. Crunchy white cabbage, red and green peppers, hummus, gherkins, salsa, spinach leaves, rocket and more, this is a hearty but healthy salad that only costs £6.25!
The Mediterranean chicken is incredibly soft and packed full of flavour. Barraka say on their website that they will make your taste buds “explode” and they most certainly achieved that aim. I opted for chilli sauce and chilli mayo on my salad so I ended up with a chilli explosion in my mouth and was clutching for a glass of water by the end of my meal. Luckily, I love spicy food so this wasn’t a problem, but you have been warned! (p.s. Don’t be afraid of eating the jalapeño, it’s not that spicy!) There are four different sauces available so if chilli isn’t your thing then there’s also Barraka Sauce, Tahini and Chimichurri.
My boyfriend opted for the rib-eye salad, which is more expensive than the other options but well worth it. Barrka‘s rib-eye beef is 28 day aged and grain fed it is incredibly succulent. All that’s added to it is Mediterranean sea salt and pepper. There’s an extra helping of beef on this salad, which costs an additional £5.25, but for most of the men I know, if extra meat is available, they’ll take it. I have to say I preferred my salad to this one but the beef is tender and full of flavour so I can see the rib-eye being a big hit as well. (Also, I never thought I’d see the day my boyfriend ordered a salad in a restaurant so I guess that says something about Barraka!)
Now let’s not forget about those chips on the side. These are hands-down some of the best chips I’ve ever tasted. No joke. Lightly spiced hand-cut chips with chilli mayo on the side is officially my new favourite. I have to admit when I first looked at the menu I didn’t even consider getting chips as a side. I was having a salad after all, it seemed silly to get a side portions of chips. However, Ben encouraged me to try them and I’m so glad he did. At only £2.25, I think these chips are great value for money as you get a rather large take-away cup full of steaming hot chips. They’re not oily at all so I convinced myself that these were a fairly healthy side dish to go for..
The decor is super cute and I couldn’t resist taking an #Ihavethisthingwithfloors photo. There’s not a huge amount of space for people to sit and eat-in, there are around eight places, but as this is more of a lunch stop, I don’t think this will be a problem. Liverpool Street is a great location that is teeming with offices and I think Barraka will soon become a favourite with the professionals working in the area.
Whilst we were enjoying our salads, several other new customers came into Barraka and I overheard them talking to Ben, the manager, about how delicious the wraps were. What’s more, the team let new customers ring the gong in their kitchen and I could tell they’d already rounded up one more new loyal member. (TRUE STORY!)
All in all, I had a fantastic experience at Barraka. I was made to feel welcome from the moment I entered and I left feeling very full and very content. It’s not often that I finish a salad bowl and think *gosh I am rather full*, but that’s exactly how I felt when I walked out the door. A salad and chips is more than enough for lunch, in fact, I’d probably get the chips to go if I came here again! (The salad really is rather large..) This is a cosy little Mediterranean restaurant, a few minutes away from Liverpool Street station and I only wished I worked in the area so I could become a regular here too.
