Valentine’s Day is tomorrow and I’m willing to bet that there are loads of you out there who haven’t planned ahead and are currently panicking about what to do. Whilst Valentine’s Day is a time that people often choose to splash out at a fancy restaurant, for those of you that have difficulty finding time to yourselves, why not do something more intimate?
Savisto are a homeware and kitchen accessories brand that provide a range of different products to use around the home at affordable prices. When I was offered the opportunity to review some of their products, I jumped at the chance because I’ve always wanted a popcorn machine and an ice cream maker! These two machines help me make two of my favourite snacks, perfect for any night in, and they couldn’t be easier to use.
The popcorn machine has a retro-design making it a super cool new accessory in my kitchen. It comes in the three parts: the machine, the nozzle and the lid, all of which are very easy to slot together, though you need to use a bit more force that you’d expect. (Don’t worry, you won’t break it!) This is a mains operated machine, no batteries involved so as soon you get it out the box, you’re good to go.
The lid of the machine actually serves as the measuring ‘cup’ so pour your popcorn seeds into the flat, red lid to check you’ve got the right amount.
Then, simply tip the seeds into the central cylinder of the machine.
Ready to go! There is actually an on/off button on the right hand side of the machine (don’t forget to press it and stare at the machine for several minutes waiting for something to happen). The machine is actually pretty loud and makes a lot of whirring sounds but don’t be put off by this, it’s perfectly normal! Within a minute, the popping should begin. Make sure you’ve placed a bowl or some sort of container under the novel to catch the popcorn with. One ‘lid’ of popcorn seeds actually filled the carton below two times, something I didn’t anticipate before and resulted in popcorn being blown all over the kitchen! Learn from my mistakes and have an extra bowl on hand just in case there’s more popcorn than expected…
Voila, freshly made popcorn! There were no burnt pieces and no undercooked pieces, something that I’ve never managed to achieve with microwavable popcorn so this machine really does serve its purpose well. The machine also comes with 6 of these retro popcorn boxes to make your movie night all the more special. As I said, one lid of popcorn seeds will probably fill two (maybe even three) of these boxes so have some on hand before you turn the machine on!
Now onto dessert! The ice cream machine maker is a little more tricky to use just because it requires some forward planning. It comes in four parts: the lid, the rotating spatula, the bowl and the base. The inside bowl needs to placed in the freezer around 8 hours before you want to start making your ice cream so it’s probably best to leave this in the freezer overnight.
The spatula is easily slotted into the lid of the machine and easy to remove as well. I was glad to see that it’s made of pretty durable plastic as it’s the sort of thing I can imagine snapping quite easily, which would ruin the machine. I was really surprised at just how easy the process is to make your own ice cream. The ingredients required are very basic, probably things you’ve already got at home, which I didn’t expect at all. For a simple flavoured ice cream you’d only need around 5 ingredients such as strawberries, double cream, sugar, lemon juice, milk and eggs. All of these items needs to mixed together until you’ve got a thick mixture (much like cake batter), and then simply poured into your frozen bowl. Attach the lid with the spatula to the bowl and you’re good to go! Plug your machine in and choose the desired setting and within 20-40 minutes, you’ve got home made ice cream.
NB. You may need a blender if you’re using fresh fruits as they will need to be made into a paste.
Along with the ice cream maker, you get a handy recipe book, which is surrpsingly comprehensive. It starts with the basics: vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, but then moves onto some much more complicated and exotic ice creams flavours that I’d never even thought to try! There are even sorbet recipes and lastly some ice cream sauce ideas.
So there you have it! With the help of Savisto, you can have the perfect night in, be it with your hubby or your best friends. Both of these machines make more than enough for two people or a small group of friends so you can be sure that there’ll be enough to last for your movie marathon.
This Valentine’s Day, snuggle down with your loved one and the boxset of your favourite show and just relax, knowing that these machines can do all the hard work for you!
