What is it?
Untitled Jersey City Project is a unique experiment in the development of an entertainment concept: it’s a work-in-progress television drama. The eight short episodes of Untitled Jersey City Project are fragments from a larger story, with many of the story threads left unresolved. But from these eight episodes, this much is clear:
The story is set amidst the fast-developing Jersey City waterfront, just across the river from Manhattan. A shining new city is being built on the edge of this gritty town. But while the glass office towers and condos are sleek and new, the rules of the game haven’t changed one bit. Everyone here has something to gain – money, fame, power. They could lose big. They could even end up dead.
The first episode kicks off with quite an ominous setting with eerily beautiful shots of Jersey City. Within the first thirty seconds, there’s already a body lying in a pool of blood. This is nothing like what I was expecting as I found this to be quite a high quality drama and I found myself quite disappointed that the episodes were not longer. The plot line is intriguing and leaves you begging for more, the acting is excellent and Jersey City is the perfect backdrop for this story.
Here’s a short synopsis of Episode 1: Amidst the burned-out buildings across the Hudson from New York City, a shining new city is being built. Up-and-coming architect Frank awakes to a cryptic call from Ray and races to the construction site to see his partner lying dead in a pool of blood. This is the new Jersey City, but unfortunately for Frank, the rules are still the same.
What I loved most about episode one was that despite the lack of speech, I still understood what was going on and it was still highly dramatic. Each and every episode starts with a dramatic scene and then we are brought forwards a couple of hours so we can see the build up to that moment. I think this is a really great technique as it ensures you keep watching so that you will find out how the action pans out and it creates a sense of foreboding throughout the video.
